Tanner Goods Salt & Pepper Collection

Wilderness Rucksack, $475 - Photo: Tanner Goods

On sale tomorrow, Tanner Goods announces their latest bags for F/W '15, the Salt and Pepper Collection. The company spent four years to get the line just right, taking their inspiration from a vintage Swiss military pack design. After thorough testing to emulate the ruggedness of that bag, they figured out how to develop that fabric and built to the original Swiss military specifications.

The material is constructed from a flex and nettle fiber blend that is woven and coated with DWR for weather resistance. What makes it really special is that the material has long been discontinued since the '70s and Tanner Goods is the first to bring it to the US.

$120-$475, available tomorrow at 12PM PST, Tanner Goods

Rimowa takes flight with their all-new F13

Photo: Rimowa

Rimowa's latest product isn't what you would expect. The luxury luggage manufacturer is producing a full-on aircraft based on their six-seater Junkers F13, which first took flight on June 25th, 1919. Founder Hugo Junkers decided the future of aviation technology lie in civilian aircraft and thus, the game-changing F13 was born.

Powered by a 450 horsepower radial engine, the F13 grabbed a huge chunk of the airline market in the '20s, flying passengers around the world inside the cantilever low-wing aircraft.

Even more incredible is the fact that Rimowa plans to offer this plan to customers beginning next May with a new F13 that will feature the same design as the original, but modernized to meet today's safety standards which will bring large improvements to the engine, landing gear, and tail unit.

Marshall Anthony ReturnsSome good news for fans of Marshall...

Marshall Anthony Returns

Some good news for fans of Marshall Anthony. The company has returned after a two-year haitus, which the company’s owners took so they could finish a menswear degree at F.I.T. Having graduated, they’ve now relaunched their neckwear line, although instead of making everything in-house, they’re now using a workshop in NYC. Everything is still handmade, however, using just needles and threads. And instead of using wool-blend interlinings, they’ve upgraded to pure wool – which should help these ties relax after a long day’s wear.

The nice thing about the company is that – although these ties are clearly aimed at men who wear tailored clothing for self-expression – all of their neckwear feels classic and tasteful. For summer, they have some solid-colored ties in slubby Matka silks and understated wool crepes, as well as some basic checks that could go well with a navy suit. For this fall, the company tells me they have some wool-Tussah silk “Donegals” that sound very interesting, as well as boldly checked cashmere-blends designed to be worn with tweeds.

Their products are all very nice, although I admit I’m not crazy about how they put their labels on the back of the tail-end of the ties. This can cause the tail to catch in the knot if you take your tie off by sliding the tail through (rather than just reversing the knot – which is what you’re supposed to do, but many of us are lazy). One easy solution: take a seam ripper and just remove the label.

For next year, Marshall Anthony plans to make shirts, pants, and even tailored jackets. Certainly a brand to keep an eye on.

Bruce, by the way, has a new book coming out this fall, and given that he’s written some of our favorite titles, we’re sure this one will be great as well. We’ll do a review come late-August, but in the meantime, you can head over to Articles of Style to read Bruce’s thoughts on a variety of subjects. A sampling:

  • Personal Style: “I was lucky to have had an incredibly tolerant mother, who allowed me to wear clothes of which she didn’t approve but tolerated. When I was a young man, a very young man (12 -16), I tried everything: zoot suits, rebel style , California casual, and everything else that was going on in the 50s. So I experimented a lot with “looks”. And that’s important: a young person should experiment, find out what works and what doesn’t. As you grow and discover who you are, you fine-tune your appearance to accommodate your personality and lifestyle.”
  • Fashion Democracy: “Beginning after World War II, the way fashion works changed radically. From the historic initiation of fashion to almost mid-20th century, fashion started at the top of the social scale and worked its way down to the bottom. But starting in 1950 or so, fashion began to be determined from the bottom up. Designers, particularly from the late 60s on, began to look to the street for inspiration. The great American icons of fashion for men — jeans, t-shirts, ‘active’ footwear, barn jackets, and the rest — all come from the street, the playing field, the war zone, and parole gear, rather than from the wealthy, the aristocratic and royal. It’s largely a democratic movement, with help from technology and a relatively stable economy.”
  • Buying Quality: “My grandfather, an ordinary blue collar working man, had one good ready-made suit and one sports jacket, one good pair of shoes, perhaps four or five dress shirts and as many ties. Today it seems that many have steaming piles of cheap clothing, but no good clothes. Even many luxury brands are no longer concerned with quality. I think the reason is that, in today’s world, we’ve lost both the sense of occasion and a sense of quality. I do find this a bit frightening because I think it may mean we no longer think about the future. Those who are concerned for the ecology have been saying this for years now, and I’m worried that it may be true. We’re living too much for today, ‘getting and spending’ as the poet William Wordsworth put it. And on an even deeper level, it means we may have no sense of faith in ourselves anymore.”

You can read the rest here.

Modern Furniture, Modern Tailoring

Another great photo from our friend CrimsonSox. Scanned from a 1948 issue of Vogue, the gentleman above is wearing a suit by Gennaro Rome and custom shoes from Gatto. Supposedly, King Alfonso XIII of Spain once said: “In Rome, there are two wonders: the Sistine Chapel and Gatto’s workshop.” The founder of Gatto unfortunately died many years ago and the company was sold to Lattanzi (another high-end Italian shoemaker). You can sometimes find their creations on eBay

Full-body sandbag workout

Test your heart, lungs and abs using a sandbag for this full-body workout

Barbells are great if you’re trying to heft the biggest weight possible, but if you’re in it for real-world strength, there’s a better option. Because of the way its centre of gravity shifts, a sandbag tests your stabilising muscles from all angles, giving you a tougher full-body test than a nice, friendly bar. If you want to make your own, use builders’ sand duct-taped inside plastic bags in a canvas sack – or you can buy one from Escape Fitness. Do this circuit three times, twice a week, to get gains from your grains.

Clean and Press

8 Reps

Start with the bag on the ground, then drive up through your heels and lift the bag quickly, flipping it over to catch it at chest height. Pause, then push the bag overhead.

Upright row

8 Reps

Grip the bag by the central handle – or, for a real test of grip strength, by the fabric. Pull upwards, bringing your elbows up to the sides. To safeguard your shoulder joints, don’t jolt. Lower the bag under control.

Zercher Lunge

10 Reps each side

A favourite with wrestlers. Grip the bag underneath with your hands clasped together, then lunge forward, alternating legs. You’ll test your core, legs and biceps.

Floor Press

10 Reps

Lie on the floor with the bag on your chest, and your triceps resting against the ground – this protects your shoulders more than traditional bench pressing. Push the bag overhead, pause, and then lower under control.

Windmill

6 Reps each side

Hold the bag overhead in one hand, and then bend at the hips, sliding your other hand down one leg.

Get-up

3 Reps each side

Expert level. Lie on the floor, holding the bag overhead by a handle, then get up on one side, keeping your weight on the opposite forearm. Bag too heavy? Hold it on your shoulder, not in your hand.

The new benchmark for low-light sensitivity, Canon's ME20F-SH

Photo: Canon

While everyone is trying to get as much resolution as technologically possible into a sensor, Canon has decided to bring some of fits focus to low-light sensitivity with what will be a gamechanger of a video camera, the ME20F-SH. Targeted at the professional market, the camera is capable of shooting at an insane ISO equivalent of more than 4,000,000. Couple that with a drone and you have the ultimate aerial nighttime setup.

Though it doesn't shoot 4K, Canon was able to achieve this with full 1080P HD resolution and don't worry, the sensor is more than capable. They've packed a 35mm full-frame inside the body and the lens mount is compatible with their vast library of Canon lenses. All that tech isn't cheap, the camera will hit shelves later this year for $30,000.

Real Bloody Mary: A Guide To La Tomatina

tomatina

Once a year, thousands flock to the Spanish town of Buñol and the streets run red. It's an unforgettable scene, but not the bloody spectacle of the country's famous bull fights. The phenomenon in Buñol has more in common with spaghetti bolognese or a Sunday morning Bloody Mary than the gore of Pamplona. That's because the red is the pulp from millions of overripe tomatoes and the event is La Tomatina, the world's largest food fight. This year La Tomatina celebrates its 70th anniversary,...

Own Michael Jackson’s Jacket

Auction house Nate D. Sanders is auctioning off a prototype jacket that was used to make the final double rider Michael Jackson wore on the cover of Bad. The auction description reads:

Michael Jackson’s personally owned and worn “Bad” jacket, made as a prototype for his iconic video and cover for the album. A follow-up to smash hit “Thriller”, the record-setting “Bad” album produced more Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles than any other. Design of the final incarnation of the jacket departs only slightly from this prototype, featuring more metal embellishments overall. Custom black jacket in heavy denim features an asymmetrical design, with double zip front set on a diagonal. With studded collar, lace-up sides and belts on the sleeves. The right sleeve is wrapped with four nylon belts outfitted with silver tone metal buckles, spaced evenly along the center of the sleeve. Left sleeve features three belts set on a diagonal with a zipper between the first and second belt. Jacket is in fine condition.

Also up for auction is one of Michael Jackson’s white sequined gloves. Starting price for that item is $20,000, which makes the $10,000 jacket seem like a steal.

Introducing: Zenith Launches 3 New References In Its Iconic Type 20 Collection

If you’re anything like me, you mainly know Zenith for their El Primero Chronographs—and, most notably, for their El Primero Classic Chronograph that they released at Baselworld this year. What most people don’t know is that the 150-year-old manufacture released another batch of watches at Baselworld 2015; these pieces received less camera-time than others, but they’re all doing pretty interesting things—so it may be unfair that Zenith’s new Type 20 Pilot collection has been flying under the radar for this long.

Wearing Tan ShoesTan shoes can be a great option in the spring...

Wearing Tan Shoes

Tan shoes can be a great option in the spring and summer months, but they’re not always the easiest to wear. The problem is: being lighter in color, they can stick out too much from underneath your trousers. And since most of us are accustomed to dark and subdued looking footwear, wearing something bright and light can be difficult.

There are some good ways to make them work, however. Here are some suggestions:

  • Wear lighter-colored suits. The easiest solution is to wear lighter-colored suits, so that the shoes themselves are still some of the darker elements in your ensemble. Niels from Berlin in the first photo has paired his polo suede shoes with a pearl grey suit, striped blue shirt, and lightly patterned navy tie. The shirt and tie help add visual interest to an otherwise plain ensemble, while the lighter-colored suit and shoes allow things to look seasonal. Note, you can do the same thing with sport coats. Try tan trousers and a mid-blue jacket
  • Go for low contrast. Much more of an expert move, but also potentially much more rewarding. Greg in NYC in the next two photos has gone for lower-contrast outfits. Not only are his pants and jackets lighter colored, his shirts and tie are also less dark (in one case, he’s not wearing a tie at all).
  • Lean cool. When picking out a pair of tan shoes, consider the “temperature” of the color. Tans with a slightly reddish cast can be harder to wear, while those with more greens and yellows can be a little more versatile. In the last two photos, Greg and Voxsartoria show how you can wear cooler tans (here made from Edward Green’s burnt pine leather) with darker colored trousers and jackets. A much more practical option if you’re working with a smaller wardrobe, as they can still be worn with those light grey suits and mid-blue jackets for a seasonal look

At The Bench: The Restoration Of A Tudor Advisor (Reference 7926)

There are several reasons that most people should never consider bidding on a watch that has the words “as is” or “for repair” in its description on eBay. In addition to making me have to overpay for adventurous restorations, pieces like this trade at such a small discount that it is rarely, if ever, a cost effective way to get your hands on a great vintage piece. There are exceptions, but for the most part, for collectors this is a losing gamble. This recent adventure very well illustrates this point and shows off awesome vintage Tudor in the process.

Martin Architects in the Ukraine have created this beautiful loft for a lawyer with a taste for the urban and eclectic. The bold space is adorned with raw brick, cement and wood alongside refreshing designer furniture pieces. One side of a wall is also lined with organic elements such as indoor plants to offset the synthetic nature of the space. An absolutely stunning example of modern loft design with a masculine touch.

From Tip to Toe: The Essential Men's Wardrobe

Photo: Gestalten

What to wear, how to wear it, and where to get it:

"A guide for those who want to be impeccably stylish, this book presents iconic men's clothing and those who wear it, as well as leading brands and manufacturers. For any man, appearing timeless and laid back at once is a challenge. Who makes the best shoes? What styles suit me? Who makes the best white T-shirt and could I wear one with raw denim jeans to an important presentation? Where can I buy suits that are actually worth the money? Which pattern, which fabric, and which cut? Harris tweed or waxed coat? Leather vest of functional outdoor parka? Sweatshirt or V-neck and, if so, cashmere, merino, or wool? From Tip to Toe answers all of these questions and many more. There are countless manufacturers and products, but only a few brands are serious about what they do. Quality shops can provide an overview of what is currently available, but this book is a fundamental guide to the pieces that ought to accompany a man throughout his life. From the hat on his head to the sole of his shoe, From Tip to Toe presents the ever-essential items of a man's wardrobe. These include laid-back sportswear, solid everyday basics, and elegant styles for special occasions--as well as fitting accessories. These iconic pieces are worn by men who know exactly what they want and stick to it. As the dandies before them, these men pay attention to details. The featured products from small manufacturers and select brands do not embody superficial luxury, but rather represent authenticity, handcraft, quality, originality, and character. This compendium of male style showcases products that range from the elegant to the sporty, from the eccentric to the rustic, but which always stand out from the mainstream. these are items that accompany a man without overshadowing him. From Tip to Toe is a book for men who have found their style but who seek to continuously develop and refine it."

Should you switch to a high-fat diet?

Tim Noakes, expert in food science explains how living on switiching to a high-fat diet can revolutionise your fitness

I developed type 2 diabetes from what I thought was a healthy high-carb diet. I exercised regularly – I’ve run 70 marathons – and avoided high-fat food. I even wrote a book called Lore Of Running advocating a high-carb diet. But I was wrong. My pancreas basically ran out of energy and stopped producing insulin.

Now I worry when I watch the London Marathon. Most of the guys running in over six hours are fat. They’re fat because they ate lots of carbs (assuming they could tolerate them like the lean runners at the front) and are insulin-resistant. That group would run faster, feel healthier and live-longer if they went on a high-fat diet.

Very few people metabolise carbs efficiently – instead, carbs stimulate your appetite. Your energy initially spikes, and then it dips. Fat, on the other hand, is filling and provides sustained energy. Lean, athletic people can also benefit from a high-fat diet. After the Australia cricket team lost the 2013 Ashes series, they adopted this diet. The players found they could concentrate better and didn’t get tired. In the next Ashes series, three months later, they won 5-0.

Chewing the fat

So how can you switch from a carb-reliant diet to a fat-reliant one? If you’re significantly overweight, you need to cut out carbs and switch to good fats because your body is probably addicted to sugar. It might make you feel terrible at first but you’ll feel better in the long run.

If you feel you could lose 4-5kg it’s not essential to cut them out completely, although sugars (including honey) and processed foods are out. Aim to cut down to around 200g of carbs a day (most people average 300-400g), but pasta or pizza once a week is fine. Replace the carbs with healthy fats from fish, macadamia nuts, avocado, dairy (including butter, cheese and milk) and coconut and olive oils.

Breakfast is key to this diet – it’s the meal where people are most likely to overindulge in carbs. Instead, eat a high-fat English breakfast of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, sausages and tomatoes (but no fried bread). In general, eat lots of leafy green vegetables and avoid starchy ones such as potatoes.

These changes might lower your exercise tolerance at first. But after four to five weeks it will be better than before – as will your life expectancy.

The Real Meal Revolution by Tim Noakes, Jonno Proudfoot and Sally-Ann Creed is published by Robinson on 30th July, priced £20

Wing Man

To make

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Blend the blue and cream cheeses, buttermilk, parsley and chives to make the dip.
  2. In a bowl, mix the Parmesan cheese, oregano, paprika, parsley and salt and pepper. Dip each wing in melted butter then into this seasoning mixture.

Speed continues to be a major selling point of the new Empulse TT with a top speed of 100 mph. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Michael Bay swaps autobots for Navy Seals in a film based on the book 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi:

From the book:

"13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack.

13 HOURS sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country.

13 HOURS is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men--and what they accomplished--is unforgettable."

Divers watches were big at Baselworld this year, and with good reason: not only are they one of the most eye-catching timepieces a man can have on his wrist, but they're also one of the most hardworking (equally at home with your suit as with your scuba gear). Take the plunge with something from this selection of serious submersibles...

Ferrari's newest drop-top, the 488 Spider

Photo: Ferrari

Building on the bold styling introduced in the 458-derived 488 GTB, the boys in Maranello reveal their latest handiwork, the 488 Spider. Ready to annihilate the asphalt, the car delivers immense power from its 3.9L turbocharged V8 that produces 661 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque that will unleashe a sinister symphony as soon as you tap the pedal.

As you would expect, this car is no slouch. All that power will get you from 0-62 in 3.2 seconds while rapidly approaching its 203 mph top speed. That performance is achieved via Ferrari's expertise in aerodynamics as the car is one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars the company has ever produced. That wind tunnel work also makes for one of the most striking designs in the Ferrari lineup with its muscular lines and aggressive air intakes.

The folding hard-top roof is also an engineering feat in itself being a structural piece that folds itself flush over the engine and can retract and deploy in just 14 seconds.

Timepiece Tuesday: Movado 1881 Collection

  • Kempt Staff
Timepiece Tuesday: Movado 1881 Collection

You can probably spot a Movado from a mile away—thanks to their notably minimalist, and wildly popular, Museum dial watches.

But the Museum watch didn’t come on the scene until the late 1940s, over a half century after Movado began making precision mechanical timepieces in Switzerland in 1881. Hence the name of their new all-automatic-movement collection of watches harking back to their roots that was unveiled at Baselworld 2015 and has just hit their webstore.

Let’s take a closer look...

Letters To The Editor: How Modern Watchmakers Are Grappling With One Of Breguet's Greatest Inventions (And It's Not The Tourbillon)

Recently, HODINKEE reader Brandon Moore sent in a question: "I am wondering if the modern interpretations of the Breguet Natural Escapement (F.P. Journe Optimum, Kari Voutilainen Vingt-8, and Laurent Ferrier Automatic) have implemented specific solutions to the shortcomings of this design, namely the 'backlash' between the escape wheels, that Breguet experienced, and which caused him to ultimately abandon his design." This is a wonderful question, that deserves a careful response.

How to Clean Sneakers

image

There are probably hundreds of online guides at this point on how to take care of leather shoes, but few that effectively address what to do with sneakers. Over the years, I’ve tried everything – from washing machines to repurposed suede erasers to stiff-bristled brushes dipped in various mixtures. Although they’ve all been effective to some degree or another, none have been anywhere near as good as Jason Markk. Comprised of a simple brush and some cleaning solution, their basic kit takes care of everything from suede to leather to canvas.

image

The process is simple. You’ll need: Jason Markk’s cleaning kit, a small bowl of water (although here, I just used a cup), and some paper towels.

Begin by dipping your brush in the water and then shaking it out. Then apply just a few drops of the cleaning solution directly on the bristles (you don’t need much) and scrub away. Pay special attention to the toe area of the midsole, as that’s usually the most scuffed, but hardest to clean.

image

Now repeat with the other shoe. It might take a few rounds to really get everything clean, but the whole process should only take a few minutes.

image

Once done, wipe your shoes down with paper towels. If you still feel there’s some cleaning solution left, you can rinse the brush off and scrub your shoes down one or two more times.

image

Although not necessary, I like the stuff my sneakers at this point with tissue paper, so the uppers retain their shape while drying.

image

Then just leave them outside. Like with leather shoes, you’ll want to give your sneakers a day of rest before wearing them again. Although your shoes shouldn’t be soaked, any moisture that’s left in the uppers can break down the material as you flex your shoes back and forth (think about what happens with wet cardboard).

image
image

Here are some before and after shots. With the dirt and dust removed, notice how the leather doesn’t look nearly as wrinkled.

image
image

Similarly, the suede looks less haggard as well.

Jason Markk sells other cleaning products. They have disposable quick wipes for when you’re traveling and microfiber towels if you want to use something fancier than paper towels. There’s also this softer, hog-bristle brush, which they recommend for suede and nubuck. I haven’t had a problem using their basic, standard brush on my suede sneakers, but you might want to consider it for more sensitive materials (perhaps the knitted uppers on Nike’s Flyknits). Generally speaking though, the standard kit should take care of most of your sneaker cleaning needs – which is much appreciated around this time of year.

Covair's affordable and interchangeable Timepieces

Photo: Covair

So you've decided the Apple watch isn't for you, but you still find yourself with a naked wrist and an appetite for some shiny new wristwear. Newcomer Covair has got you covered with a unique new watch that lets you instantly swap out the straps and faces without the help of any tools.

Thinking about going with a more minimal dial? Just simply pull the watch face out and swap in your preferred dial. Easy as that. The case uses magnets that are strategically placed to cause no harm to the movement while still maintaining a secure fit.

Swapping out straps is just as easy. Just pressed down on the link to hook the strap or bracelet onto the springbar and you're ready to go.

A limited run of 100 "First Supporter" watch sets that contain a watch base, two watch face inserts, leather strap, metal bracelet, and a NATO will cost you only $129 when their Kickstarter launches at 8am and will eventually hit its regular price of $179, which is still a steal.

Find out more about Covair at Kickstarter.com

Hands-On: The Omega Speedmaster X-33 Solar Impulse

The Speedmaster Professional has, since its introduction in 1957, come in a truly bewildering variety of shapes, sizes, designations and limited editions, but one of the most polarizing models, when it appeared, was the X-33. The X-33 was introduced, in the first version, in 1998; it was the result of an Omega development program designed to (finally) produce a multifunction quartz watch that would be a completely modern successor to the mechanical Speedmaster Professional, and that would meet up to date NASA and ESA requirements for a flight-qualified timepiece. It was an ambitious project, which took place over the course of five years. Prototypes were flight-tested by both American and European astronauts; the first version of the X-33 would go on to be used by U.S., European, and Soviet astronauts on the Space Shuttle, the Mir Space Station, and other missions and it was used by military flight crews as well.
