How to Raise a Shine on Shell Cordovan

Want to know a dirty secret? Shell cordovan – that durable and robust leather known for its luster – doesn’t stay shiny for long. It can look pretty dull after a year’s worth of wear, and afterwards, it’s hard to get that factory-fresh gleam again. 

Readers of online menswear forums might be familiar with The Mac Method. Invented by Macarthur, a man known for his love of argyle socks and Alden shoes, it involves using a bit of polish every fifteen wears and brushing until your arms fall off. It’s hard to argue with his results, but I haven’t had much luck with the technique. 

A Shine & Co recently held a special event at Leffot, where they treated customers to their special shoeshine services. Among those shined were the shell cordovan loafers you see above – which look like night and day after A Shine & Co. was done with them. I spoke to KeaLani Lada, one of the company’s co-owners, about how they treat shell cordovan leather:

• Don’t Use Cream: Since shell cordovan is dense and non-porous, A Shine & Co. recommends forgoing cream conditioners. “We find it just sits on top of the material, rather than getting absorbed,” says KeaLani. “As a result, you get this dull – sometimes even sticky – finish. It makes for bad surface when you’re trying to build a shine.” 
  
• Build Layers of Wax: Half of A Shine & Co’s secret is about what they don’t put on: cream conditioners. The other half is about what they do: wax polishes. “You want to slowly build multiple layers,” says KeaLani. “Apply a small amount of wax with a damp rag, and then buff to a shine. On the next layer, use about half the amount of wax as you did last time so you don’t get too much build-up.” A Shine & Co’s wax polish of choice? Saphir. 
  
• Cut the Fat: Wear shell enough and you’ll start to notice white streaks forming around the creases. That’s the leather’s fat getting expressed through the surface. To clean it up, lightly dampen a rag with a small 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water. Doing so not only helps get rid of those white streaks, it also prevents the fat from spreading across your shoes – and dulling that glow. 
  
• Strip it Down: Sometimes you just need to start anew. To get rid of old layers of polish and dried up conditioner, wipe your shoes down with naphtha lighter fluid. The idea admittedly sounds scary, but KeaLani assures us it’s gentle. “Just don’t use too much and don’t rub too hard. Common sense will go a long way.”

Row a 2K properly to increase power endurance and get a guaranteed V-Shape body

Rowing is hard, that's why Steve Redgrave used to renounce the coxless four after seemingly every Olympics (only to inevitably knuckle down and scoop another gold medal at the next one). More specifically the 2,000m- the distance of every Olympic event- emphasises endurance, power delivery, and mental toughness. It’s also one of the few forms of cardio that builds muscle rather than eating it away all while building a V-shaped body. A 7min 30 sec 2K row is respectable and 7 min is impressive. Here is how to get there. 

The form

Yanking at the handle like a lawnmower won’t cut it. Here’s how the pros pull.

1. The Catch

Keep your arms straight, head up and upper body leaning forward from the hips. ‘Your shins shouldn’t go past vertical,” says David Hart of rowing machine company Concept2. ‘And don’t overreach.’

2. The Drive

Start the drive by pressing with your legs. As you move back lean back slightly, then finally add the arm pull. ‘Your hands move in a straight line to and from the flywheel,’ says Hart. 

3. The Finish

‘At the end of the stroke, your upper body should be leaning back to about 11 o’clock. Keep the handle held lightly below your ribs, and don’t “chicken wing” it- keep your elbows in.

4. The recovery

‘Extend your arms until they’re straight, then lean forward from your hips. Once’ your hands have cleared your knees, allow your knees to bend and slide the seat forward.”

The Plan

Devised by Gym Jones coach, Pieter Vodden, this 2k- smashing strategy takes just 11 days to complete. Repeat the whole thing until your best reaches the ‘respectable’ time of 7min 30sec.

Day 1

Row for 30 sec with 90sec recovery. Start by aiming to go 150m per 30sec period and increase that by 1m per round. Take it up as far as you can- 170 is the goal.

Day 2 Rest

Day 3

Row 10 x 500m with 1 min rest. Try and hold your intended 2K ‘Split time’ pace- so if you’re shooting for a 7min 2K, you need to hit 1min 45 sec. On the last round go all out.

Day 4/5 Rest

Day 6 Warm up for ten minutes, and then row 1,000m as fast as possible.

Day 7 Rest

Day 8 Warm up for ten minutes, and then row 1,500m as fast as possible.

Day 9/10 Rest

Day 11

Warm up for 20 minutes at a slow pace, with occasional ‘power 10s’- ten hard strokes at your target 2K pace. Then row 2,000m as fast as possible.

Just when you thought you've seen all the incredible cars that are hitting the auction block next month in Monterey, Gooding & Co. drops a bombshell of three of the most rare and special Ferraris in the world: the 1961 250 GT SWB California Spider, a 1957 410 Superamerica Series II Coupe, and a 1965 500 Superfast.

At the top of the list is the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider which is estimated to go for a whopping $16-$18,000,000 and at this auction they'll be presenting a 3095 GT chassis that is one of the 37 covered-headlight SWB models.

Next up is a '57 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Series II Coupe, a chassis 0717 SA example once owned by HRH Mohammad Shah Reza Pahlevi of Iran. The car features a red roof and a Grigio Metallizzato exterior and under the hood is a Aurelio Lampredi-derived 4.9-liter V-12. Estimates for this 410 are $5,000,000-$6,000,000. 

Last but not least, a 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast, our favorite of the bunch and wrapped in an immaculate navy blue exterior. Like the previous Ferrari, this model was also under royal ownership originally purchased brand new by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan. This one is expected to go for $3,000,000-$3,400,000.

Tesla grabbed headlines when it launched the new P85D model with its all-wheel-drive system and an "Insane" mode that takes the car from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. Today, Elon Musk is bringing an even faster mode to the car and it elevates the Model S into supercar territory with what Tesla is calling "Ludicrous mode."

Available as an option on the new top-of-the-line Model S P90D, the mode will allow the car to reach 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, which is fast enough to outrun a Ferrari 458 Italia. For it to achieve that speed, the car gets a new 90 kWh battery and a total driving range of 300 miles, when you stick to the speed limit, of course. Customers with a P85D can also head to a local Tesla dealer and get the upgrade for $5000.

Well, you probably shouldn't mix cognac and cycling in general, but we couldn't ignore just how beauty of designer and cyclist Yorgo Tloupas's flask created with one of the oldest cognac houses in the world, Martell. The idea here isn't a flask for your bike, but combines a water bottle with a special reservoir for Martell's finest beverages.

The weekend is looking out for planet Earth.

Marilyn Monroe was no stranger to taking photos, but most people never saw her in private. Today, we decided to offer a visual treat, rounding up some photos that aren't as well known. Scroll through for shots of the siren relaxing at home, trying on costumes, and getting lost in a book.

The most obvious difference is in the last – that wooden form over which leather is pulled in order to give the material shape. The C&Js are made on the company’s 341 last, which features a nice, almond-shaped toe. I like that it has a conservative sense of style without being overly bulbous. 

The Saint Crispin’s, on the other hand, are built on their much sleeker Classic last. Despite how things appear in the photographs, these actually aren’t any longer than the C&Js. The body and toe box are just narrower, giving the boots a slimmer and sleeker profile. And surprisingly, although they fit much snugger than the Brecons, they’re just as comfortable. 

Some of the difference can be accounted for in the welting process. The Brecons are machine-welted through a Goodyear machine, while the Saint Crispin’s have been hand assembled. This allows Saint Crispin’s to trim the sole much closer to the uppers, as they don’t have an exterior welt. As a result, the sole on the Saint Crispin’s almost disappears from view when seen from above, while the C&Js have a noticeable ridge that sticks out from the perimeter.  

There’s also the waist treatment, which on the Saint Crispin’s, gives the boots a more sophisticated sense of shaping than a pair of shoes that only relies on a sleek last. Here, the waist curves in, so that it hugs the arch of the foot. This allows the ball of the boot to look a little more dramatic as it sweeps out. The waist on the C&Js, on the other hand, is just as you’d find on any Goodyear welted shoe. It curves in, but not nearly as deep or high.

You can really appreciate the difference when you view the shoes from below. The waist on the Saint Crispin’s is almost a third of the size smaller than the C&Js. Also, there’s no visible stitching, making this something like a rubber version of a channeled sole. 

This isn’t to knock the C&Js, of course. In fact, I count them as some of my favorite boots. The slightly more conservative shaping makes them easier to pair with a wide range of trousers – from dressy flannels to casual jeans. If you needed a versatile pair of shoes, you’d be hard pressed to find a better model. 

The Saint Crispin’s, on the other hand, are much more striking. And although the basic stylistic details are the same – chukka boots made from dark brown, textured leather and built on studded, Dainite soles – they couldn’t be more different. They only really feel right under slim, tailored trousers, but hot damn – they look so much better when they’re worn. 

Incidentally, these were bought through M Classic, which I was introduced to thanks to Gentlemen’s Footwear. They were kind enough to have these boots remade after Saint Crispin’s attached the wrong sole (they used a double leather sole instead of Dainite). If you’d like to buy the original boots, they’re available at M Classic for a slightly discounted price. The size is listed as 7.5F but I find these to fit my 9D feet. Should you have any concerns, you can contact M Classic. The guys there provide excellent service and I can’t recommend them enough. 

The best lobster roll in Maine can't be ordered in any restaurant. Instead, go to Fort Williams Park and find the Bite Into Maine food truck. Trust us.

War Craft: Jewelry Made from Vietnam Era Bombs

I’ve been looking for a new necklace for a while now. My friend Kyle has one with a silver twig on it, which I’ve always liked. It’s made by Ransoun, but unfortunately – although the company’s website is still up – they’re no longer in business. I’ve also look to Maison Margiela, a company known for their simple and deconstructed designs. Some seem nice enough, although others are confusingly expensive ($400 for what effectively looks like a mailbox key?). 

Recently, I came across Article22, a company that’s turning Vietnam Era bombs into homeware and accessories. Their story starts in the 1960s, when Laos was embroiled in what’s now known as The Secret War. In an effort to control communism in the region, the US military dropped about 1.5 million tons of explosives on the South East Asian state, making it the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. Unfortunately, an estimated third of those ordinances didn’t exploded, which means about 75 million unexploded bombs are littered throughout the countryside. Many of those are still killing people today. 

Article22 is taking metals from some of those Vietnam Era bombs; melting them down; and turning them into bracelets, necklaces and spoons. Most of the production is done in Laos, and a portion of their profits is donated to organizations working to clear the land of explosives. 

I bought two of their necklaces. One is a lightweight, scrap aluminum piece that comes on a thin, 24″ silver chain. Then there’s a “shard” design that’s also made from scrap aluminum, but has been finished with precious and semi-precious metals in order to give it some weight and shine. The second is a bit nicer, I think, and at the moment, is available at 50% off ($150 to $175, depending on the metal you select, which is just $50-75 more than the Story ID Tag model). If you need longer or shorter chains, the company can provide them upon request. 

Elisabeth, one of the co-founders of the company, tells me that they’re planning to release another men’s collection later this year. Prices will likely be higher, as they rarely have sales that go this low, but at least a portion of your money is going towards a good cause.

Expert tips and targeted exercises to keep you fit during rugby season

Use the mental state ‘flow’ to get better results in the gym without the grind

‘Flow’, to the uninitiated, sounds like a term dreamed up by new-age gurus to describe what happens at a particularly productive Rainbow Rhythms class. It's not, it's a state of mind that will get you better results in the gym.

Technically, it's defined as an ‘optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best’. According to Steven Kotler, creator of the Flow Genome Project ‘concentration becomes so laser-focused that everything else falls away. Action and awareness merge. Our sense of self and self-consciousness completely disappear. And, of course, all aspects of performance are incredibly heightened.’

This, of course, is not news to top performers around the world, who’ve been harnessing the state through workouts since before the term was coined. Below you’ll find a selection of workouts designed to harness the flow state and increase your work capacity – without the grind.

7 ways to improve concentration

Core strength and agility

Before you build, you need firm foundations. Ginástica Natural, developed by surfer and Brazilian jiu jitsu expert Alvaro Romano, fuses moves from both disciplines into a nonstop workout that’ll challenge both your core and your co-ordination. Do this entry-level flow at least once a week.

Kickback

Starting from standing, dive forward onto your hands, bringing your leg high up behind you. Bring your foot down and go straight into the next move.

Lunge twist

With one leg forward, feeling the stretch, twist to face your leading knee and bring the hand on that side into the air. Hold it, then step into the same stretch on the other side.

Roll

From the lunge, pass the arm opposite your forward leg in front of your body, and roll onto that side. While on the floor swing one leg to your and and then come back up into a crouch.

Cossack

From your crouching position, bring one leg straight up in the air as if you’re kicking an opponent above you. Hold, then repeat on the other side.

Hollow sit to press-up

From the cossack, lower yourself to the ground, hold briefly and then spin your legs around behind you, coming into a press-up.

Pop-up

From the press-up position, lower to the floor and then explode up, as if you’re jumping onto a surfboard.

Do the best workout for your core

Power and Endurance

You don’t need weights to build a physique worthy of an MMA fighter. Strikeforce veteran André Galvão combines gymnastic moves and animal drills into a cardio-sapping circuit. Do them for five nonstop minutes at the end of your workout.

Alligator Walk

Bring one knee up as high as possible next to the elbow on the same side, keeping your hips as low as you can. Lower into a press-up, then repeat on the other side so you ‘crawl’ forward, gator style.

Gorilla Walk

From a squatting position, walk your hands forward on the floor until you’re stretched almost full-length, then sit back on your haunches briefly and explode forward into a jump, landing with your feet by your hands. Repeat five times.

Macao

It’s Portuguese for ‘monkey’. Sit with your hands and the soles of your feet on the floor, then bridge up, bring your arm behind your head and move on to your toes. Experts would move into a flip – you should hold the position for a second, lower and repeat on the other side.

Technical Stand

Fighters use this to get up efficiently, but it’s also a core-bracer. After sitting down when you finish the macaco, fold one leg under yourself and plant your other heel on the ground, pressing your weight through it to stand up.

Test and improve your endurance 

Mobility and Speed

Functional muscle is about movement, not size. Build both mobility and speed with these moves inspired by free running and calisthenics.

Squat to all fours

Keeping your weight on your heels, do a squat. Staying controlled, lean forward onto all fours. Go straight into the next move.

Dive Bomber Push-up

Starting on all fours, dive your face towards the floor, trying to keep as low as possible. At the end of the move, bring your chest up.

Mountain Climber

Without taking your hands off the floor, pop up into a press-up position and then bring one knee forward, then the other.

Sit-out

Starting on all fours, take one hand off the floor and ‘kick’ the opposite leg through to where it used to be.

Shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz, the campaign features model Lucky Blue Smith (who also featured in the new Tom Ford Autumn/Winter 2015 campaign), working puffer jackets-and-trouser ensembles in the surrounds of ethereal Iceland. With all the Batmans, Spider-Mans and Avengers out there, the obscure Ant-Man story looked to be set up for failure. But Marvel shook things up and eschewed their tried-and-true superhero movie formula to make a movie that stands out against the rest.

Kelly Slater's latest focus isn't winning another surfing championship, the famed surfer has spent the last couple of years building a new menswear company with the aim to improve supply chain conditions and create great looking, sustainable products. The end result is Outerknown, a clean-cut line of stylish menswear pieces that brings together a taste for fashion, travel, and of course, surf. 

One of the key features in the line is their use of Econyl, a nylon yarn that is created from pre and post-consumer waste. It’s on Sale: Steven Alan Sample Sale

Steven Alan remains one of the coolest American retailers online, even though most of what they sell is their decent though rarely outstanding house brand, which is like a slightly more exclusive J. Crew. Right now, they’re running one of their “sample sales” (mostly old stock, not samples, per se) and many items from the house brand and lines like Arpenteur and United Arrows Beauty and Youth are discounted deeper than 50%. The trick for me is sorting the stock by designer A-Z, and scanning the non-Steven-Alan stuff (sorry, Steven Alan?). You Are a Target Market: Modern Bachelorhood and Men’s Media

Manisha Aggarwal-Schifellite, writing in the Awl, details (critically) the history of the bachelor, from his enshrinement in law in the 1700s to his rise in post-WWII America in men’s magazines like Esquire and Playboy, which dished out clothing advice as well as tips for entertaining, etc. at a time when men were wrestling with their roles in society, at work, and at home.

Esquire‘s portrayal of bachelorhood was based on looking and acting the part of the swinging ladies’ man, even though most of the magazine’s readers were married. Esquire’s idealized postwar bachelor had no obligations outside of his own desire for women and luxury products (often considered one in the same). He bought his own clothes, drove his own car, and took solo vacations to exotic places.

For the most part, the single man is still presented in Esquire as the one who has the most control over his life, and as a result, is the most masculine one can aspire to be.

Aggarwal-Schifellite points out how men’s publications intentionally and carefully make certain tasks, like shopping and cooking, that might be considered unmasculine, palatable to readers, often by framing them as things women do but that men can do better. I read and enjoy a lot of men’s magazine writing, current and “vintage,” but it’s good to be aware when you’re being condescended to. Read more here.

Repairing Alden’s Shell Cordovan Boots

Although we all know well-made shoes can last for decades with the occasional resoling, it’s always amazing to see the before and after pictures of a shoe repair. These beat up and near-destroyed shell cordovan Alden boots were brought into Moulded Shoe earlier this year. They looked like they’ve been through a war – the soles were worn past their corkbed and the uppers were heavily scratched and discolored. 

Rafael, whose family has owned the store since the 1940s, tells me that when the soles have been this worn down, they repair the shoes on one of their custom lasts. “The problem is that we have to completely deconstruct and rebuild the sole, which means when you take off the bottom, the uppers are loose – like a sock,” he explains. “So before we rebuild the bottom, we have to put the uppers on one of our custom lasts in order to give them some structure.” 

Next, the uppers were restored by stripping away the dirt and old layers of polish. Then new creams and waxes are layered before the shoes are buffed out. “Shell cordovan is a tough leather, so it can last for decades. With something like this, you just need to rebuild the luster.”

What else can they do for shoe repairs? “Pretty much anything,” says Raphael. “We repair damaged speed hooks; patch up holes in heel pads; replace soles. We can even change a sole from leather to crepe or Commando. The only question is whether the uppers are in good enough condition to warrant a repair job. If the leather is cracked, sometimes a customer might be better off just getting new shoes.”

Less than two months later, Jhonathan Florez, another giant in the world BASE jumping, died while training in Switzerland, shaking the community yet again. Keys to success

Deke attributes his impressive physique to structured training, pinpoint nutrition and a well-balanced schedule

1. Split your training

‘I train six days a week, using a bodybuilding-style body part split,’ Deke says. ‘Typically I train my back on Monday, my abs and shoulders on Tuesday, my chest on Wednesday. Thursday would be legs and Friday would be arms, then on Saturday I’ll do an all-round touch-up day. I take Sunday off as a rest day. I tend to use a lot of supersets and drop sets to help get as much volume into my workouts as possible. For some people doing four sets of 12 reps for every exercise would be plenty, but for me it’s just not enough.’

2. Nail your nutrition

‘I’d guess around 80% of the results I’ve had are due to my nutrition – it’s definitely the most important thing. Understanding the science behind how your body uses carbs and fat and protein is crucial. You can train as hard as you like, but if your diet’s not on point, you won’t get anywhere. Keeping your intake of sugar and unhealthy fats down and eating plenty of protein is a great place to start, then you need to adjust your carb intake – either increasing it if you want to build muscle or lowering it if you’re trying to burn fat. Salmon with sweet potato and steak with brown rice are some of my favourite meals.’

3. Find the right balance

‘I work a full-time nine-to-five sales job and I’m also a musician – I do alternative R&B fused with a bit of hip-hop – plus I’m a family man with a partner, a two-year-old son and a daughter on the way, so finding the time to train requires organisation and discipline! To make things easier I try to do my workouts first thing in the morning. Now that I’m a Protein Dynamix™ ambassador I’m looking forward to doing more fitness modelling too, so things are only going to get busier, but my aim is always to find a healthy balance with everything in life.’

Can fitness apps help you lose weight and beat your PB? MF's Freddy Wichert investigates

Like many 30-somethings, I’m dangerously close to developing a ‘dad bod’ despite not having any offspring to show as an excuse. I cycle to work, go for the occasional run, and six months ago, signed up to the gym. I took my complimentary PT session and came away with a simple workout and then, unsure of what to do next, followed the same plan to the letter for months. Progress and motivation quickly dissipated. At this point I turned to my smartphone.

I’m not the only one seeking digital alternatives. A 2014 study found that 60% prefer to use their smartphone to track health and fitness over listening to music. Research is raw, but a recent Australian study found that fitness apps, including Nike Training Club and Gorilla Workout Free, are just as effective as group cycling (spinning) for burning calories. Admittedly the same study found that one in three people stop using apps because they’re too hard.

Then I found something that seemed ideal. Freeletics is an online and in-app tool that promises to deliver a comprehensive, intuitive fitness programme to get you in shape. Founded in Munich in 2013, Freeletics offers an alternative to crowded gyms and expensive personal trainers, and people clearly find it appealing – it’s one of the fastest-growing apps available on iOS and Android, with over five million users in more than 160 countries. I decide all those millions can’t be wrong, and install the app.

My first impression of Freeletics is positive. The free app provides dozens of workouts, each named after Greek gods, which is appropriate since they promise to transform you into an Adonis. The workouts use bodyweight moves such as burpees, sprawls, jump squats, pull-ups (I use a doorframe mount from Iron Gym) mountain climbers and sprints that you have to complete as fast as possible. Freeletics applies the protocols of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), which cause an oxygen debt – called the after burn effect – to encourage your body to torch calories and improve your endurance.

The best health and fitness apps

Train like the gods

There are various benefits: you can opt to focus each workout on endurance or strength; every move has a slick video form guide with training cues; it saves you time; you can post your scores on the Freeletics social community to compare with those of other users; and it rewards you with points and level-ups for completing it. However, these seem less appealing when I take on the first workout, ironically named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of pleasure: 50, then 40, 30, 20 and ten reps of burpee press-ups, squats and sit-ups as fast as possible. I almost faint just reading it. Burpees have never been my strong suit.My lower back feels too weak and, demoralised and in pain, I give up halfway through.

The free app offers these workouts, but you have to invest (£25.99 for three months of Freeletics Coach and a further £21.58 for a 15-week nutrition guide offering weekly recipes) if you want to get any actual coaching. I upgrade to Coach for a tailored weekly plan, which means I need to take a fitness test – and memories of Aphrodite come swirling back. Max burpees in five minutes, max lunges in five minutes and max pull-ups in 1min 40sec. Once I submit my (paltry) scores, the app’s algorithm works out a programme to follow.

Impersonal training

For my next workout it tasks me with taking on Aphrodite again, although I only need to do two-fifths of the full workout. You can also rate the difficulty of each training week so the next one will be adjusted accordingly, and you can swap out moves you can’t manage. Good riddance, burpees.

Over the next six weeks I follow the programme as best I can, with the prospect of improving my times and earning more points keeping me motivated. I still train only twice a week on average, but I’m able to do so in the privacy of my own bedroom, disgruntled downstairs neighbours permitting, and I’m seeing real changes. I’ve lost two kilos of body fat and my PBs for press-ups, sit-ups and 400m sprints have all improved.

I’m not quite a fully-fledged fanatic, though. I still detest burpees but all I can do is avoid them, whereas one-on-one training with a personal trainer would have identified and attempted to resolve the problem rather than ignoring it. The Coach also throws up the odd, seemingly pointless workout. ‘Run 40m’, for example. I already did that just chasing my bus down on the way to work. Ultimately Freeletics is a self-contained sport. The Coach makes you good at Freeletics, rather than specifically tailoring it to your other sporting passions and individual concerns. I might have cut my Aphrodite time in half but I miss the personal touch of one-on-one coaching.

I enjoyed hearing Friend of Put This On Paul Lukas of the amazing sports uniform blog UniWatch on this episode of former NPR host Jackie Lyden’s show The Seams. The episode also features a very interesting interview with designer Todd Snyder.

Let’s be honest, few of us are handsome enough to look good in just a shirt and a pair of pants, and summer doesn’t offer many chances for layering. To make up for the lack of outerwear this summer, I’ve been relying on slightly more oddball shirts. I have a patchwork piece from Neighborhood that I sometimes use as an overshirt, and then this linen popover from Visvim that I like to throw over thin tees and henleys. 

The nice thing about popovers is that they’re interesting enough to wear on their own. Dressier versions such as this one from G. Inglese can be worn tucked-in with a pair of trousers for a classic Agnelli look, while more casual versions can be worn out with a pair of jeans and sleek boots. This one from Visvim is made from a soft, enzyme washed linen, and features a painted and distressed button, as well as a uniquely frayed collar line. Together with the dropped shoulder, boxier silhouette, and antique-inspired print, these details give the shirt a slightly more vintage sensibility. I typically wear it with jeans and some suede Chelsea boots, and then roll up the sleeves. 

You can find Visvim at any number of places. Speciality boutiques such as Haven, Union, and Shiprock Santa Fe carry a nice selection. Mr. Porter also carries the line, and some of their pieces are discounted at the end of every season. For the best prices, however, you’ll want to buy second-hand through eBay, Grailed, or Superfuture. There’s also Stylistics Japan, who will sell you something straight from Japan (useful given the strong USD-to-Yen exchange rate). Lastly, you can check Rakuten and Yahoo Auctions Japan, although with those, you’ll want to know what you’re doing. The downside to buying second-hand or from an overseas shop, of course, is that you can’t return something if it doesn’t work out – but on the upside, prices can be a lot cheaper.

A tried and tested 4-week plan to get a V-shaped body

Torch fat and bag a V-shaped body with coach Natalie Morley from Phoenix Stength. 

The plan

‘Don’t underestimate the intensity of this barbell complex,’ says Morley. ‘Keep the weight light enough to allow you to do all the moves with good form for the best results.’

You don’t have to be big to be tough. It’s true of most featherweight boxers and it definitely applies to this empty barbell complex. Pick up a barbell using a snatch grip and do all six moves back to back before setting it down.

‘The weight might not look challenging but the moves are,’ says trainer Natalie Morley (phoenix-strength.co.uk), who devised this plan. ‘Even with a light weight, you’ll torch calories, and the moves will develop your skill and mobility for the most technical of Olympic lifts: the snatch.’

Use the four-week plan above, doing this complex two or three times a week as a finisher to burn off belly fat and enhance your functional fitness.

Bent-over row

Grasp the bar with hands double shoulder-width apart. Hinge forwards at your hips, keep your core braced and raise the bar towards your sternum.

Pro-tip: 'Focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together,' says Morley

Deadlift

Squat to lower the bar to shin height, keeping your chest up and your back straight. Then drive your hips forwards to stand tall. Reverse the move back to the start.

Pro-tip: ‘Pull your shoulders back and down to maintain a flat, neutral spine’

High pull

From standing, move your hips back and lower the bar to mid-thigh height, then drive your hips forwards powerfully and quickly raise the bar up to mid-chest height, leading with your elbows so they stay above the bar.

Pro-tip: ‘Keep the bar close to your body and in contact with your hips as you drive them forwards to generate power’

Muscle snatch

In the same way as with the high pull, drive your hips forwards and raise the bar quickly but bring it all the way up, keeping it close to your body, until your arms are locked out above you.

Pro-tip: ‘As the bar reaches shoulder height, rotate your hands around it and punch it overhead’

Klokov press

On the final muscle snatch, lower the bar to rest on your upper back and shoulders. Bend your legs to lower into a quarter squat, then drive up powerfully, using the momentum to press the bar overhead.

Pro-tip: ‘Keep looking straight ahead and avoid craning your neck forwards’

Back squat

Lower the bar back onto your upper back and shoulders and sink into a deep squat, keeping your weight on your heels and your chest up. Then drive your hips forwards as you return to standing.

Pro tip: ‘To help keep your chest up, pull down on the bar as if you’re trying to break it in half across your back’

Sweet potatoes are super healthy. Follow these recipes and they'll be super tasty too

It’s easy to make a healthy meal from a sweet potato, nature’s jack-of-all-trades. It’s equally satisfying baked on its own, mashed and paired with sausages or as part of a dessert. Stuffed with nutrients and fibre, it’s also lower GI than many stodgier traditional carb sources – including regular spuds – so sub it in for potatoes in a variety of meals to reduce the risk of spiking your blood sugar and minimise fat storage.

Sweet potato hash

Ingredients (serves 2)

2 small sweet potatoes, cubed / 1 onion, chopped / 1tbsp olive oil / 1tsp cayenne pepper / Salt and pepper to taste / 1 red pepper, chopped / 1tbsp dried mixed herbs

To make

Heat the oil over a medium heat and cook the sweet potatoes and onions with the salt, pepper and cayenne pepper, covered, for about five minutes until soft. Remove the lid and cook for two to three minutes until browned. Add the remaining ingredients, mix and cook, covered, for another two to three minutes. Remove the lid, garnish with the mixed herbs and serve immediately. karolgladki.com

Sweet potato chocolate pudding

Ingredients (serves 2)

1 large sweet potato / 35g unsweetened cocoa powder / 2tbsp pure maple syrup / 60ml unsweetened vanilla almond milk / ½tsp espresso powder / ½tsp pure vanilla extract

To make

Bake the sweet potato in an oven, preheated to 200°C/gas mark 6, for one hour until soft, then peel it and purée in a food processor. Measure out 150g of the puréed sweet potato and mix it with all the remaining ingredients in the blender until smooth.

Baked eggs in sweet potato

Ingredients (serves 1)

1 large sweet potato / 2 eggs / 1tbsp grated parmesan cheese

To make

Heat your oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Prick the sweet potato a few times, place it on a baking tray and cook it for 45 minutes. Allow it to cool, then hollow out a hole in the centre of the sweet potato, place it inside a small baking dish and crack the eggs into the hole. Top with the cheese and bake for 25 minutes. allapoppy.com

Those legendary three letters will soon be making its way to showrooms as Acura begins production later this Fall at their Ohio plant. The company has been ramping up the excitement for the car as it made its latest appearance as the pace car at this year's Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

As you'll see, that mid-engine, six-cylinder twin-turbo screamed its way up the mountain decked out in its red and white livery and happily devoured all 12 miles and every single one of the 156 turns of the legendary, 14,410 foot mountain. If you needed a refresher, the new NSX will be a hybrid, all-wheel-drive supercar with three electric motors and a 3.5L V6 twin-turbo that produces over 550 hp. Pricing is expected be over $150,000 and will be available later this year.

With Star Wars on everyone's mind these days, MB&F could not have come at a better time with their new Musicmachine 3. Celebrating their tenth anniversary, the new Musicmachine is inspired by the Galactic Empire's standard issue starfighter and an icon of Sci-Fi spaceships, the Tie Fighter.

It's Bad vs. Evil in DC Comics latest movie, Suicide Squad. The studio is taking on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with guns blazing and took to Comic-Con to debut the all-star cast of anti-heroes and a first look at what everyone has been waiting for, Jared Leto's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. 

Out next summer, the movie follows Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, and Viola Davis as the Squad's leader, Amanda Waller. Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch).

Get Rough With Your Neckwear

Everyone loves corduroy and tweed jackets in the fall – and the wool and cashmere ties that accompany them – but summer also has its own casual options. A linen or cotton sport coat can give you all the benefits of a tailored jacket without making you look like you just came from the office, and you can pair one with a silk knit or linen four-in-hand for a nice off-duty look. 

My favorite ties around this time of year are those made from slubby silks, such as the ones you see above. You typically see them come in one of five varieties:

• Raw Silk: Easily the most common of the five, raw silk – sometimes called shantung – is made from silk fibers where the gummy sericin has been left on (hence, it’s “raw”). When buying a raw silk tie, pay attention to the weave. Something made from a dense weave can feel thicker and heavier than something that has been loosely woven (notice how the dotted raw silk tie above is much denser than the striped raw silk next to it). You can find raw silk ties at any number of places these days, such as Drake’s, Bigi, Vanda, Shibumi, Viola Milano, Fontana1961, Conrad Wu, J. Press, and Chipp. 
• Tussah: Sometimes mis-labeled as raw silk, even though the two are not the same, Tussah is made from the silk of silkworms that have been allowed to live on a wild diet. The resulting fabric typically feels softer and airier than raw silk textiles, which makes these ties perfect for the dog days of summer. Drake’s makes some great Tussah neckwear, which you can find at Gentlemen’s Footwear, The Armoury, and Drake’s online store. 
• Matka: A rough, basketweave fabric that’s made from the silk of pierced cocoons. Much of Matka’s texture is derived from its weave, rather than the irregularity of the yarns, although it still has some nice slubs. You can find Matka ties at Sid Mashburn, Vanda, Marshall Anthony, and Chipp.
• Bourette: A fabric woven from silk waste yarns, which gives this a knotty and uneven surface. Vanda has some nice bourette ties this season that look like slubby, raw spun versions of grenadine. 
• Noile: Made from the broken, short fibers that are leftover when waste silk has been torn up, dressed, and combed. Looks a bit more like textured cotton than silk, even when compared to the matte options above. Available at Mountain & Sackett. 

How to wear: As a more casual tie, you can wear slubby silks with any kind of sport coat. If the color is solid, or the pattern conservative, you can even use one to dress down a suit. Whatever you do, keep these to your spring and summer clothes. They’re too warm-weather specific to wear with flannels and tweeds.

Carrozzeria Ghia has quite the resume and their 1953 8V Supersonic is surely one of the biggest highlights on that impressive list. This incredible example is hitting the Quail Lodge Auction in August and according to Bonhams, this was the tenth 8V Supersonic built by Carrozzeria Ghia. The car was in the same hands for more than 40 years before it went through a thorough eight-year restoration costing over $600,000.

To get the restoration just right, Fiat 8V expert Paul Lazaros was called in and oversaw the process. His expertise proved to be beyond useful as Lazaros owned the original 8V Supersonic prototype and had a digital analysis done to achieve an accurate and technologically precise restoration. 

The comprehensive restoration included a transmission rebuild, recreated tail lamps and wheel discs, Italian doeskin-tan leather seats, original Borrani wire wheels, and much more. Expected to go for $1.8-$2.4 million, the 8V Supersonic will go up for bid on August 14th.

If you’re short of space and time, getting gymnastics rings is one of the best investments you’ll make. One ring to rule them all? Try two from Fitness Health. As well as unlocking an array of new workout moves, they add unpredictability to existing ones, forcing your stabiliser muscles to work overtime to keep up. But there’s another benefit. ‘A lot of moves can put excess strain on the elbows, since your wrist wants to rotate naturally but can’t,’ says strength coach Chad Waterbury. ‘The solution is simple: use rings.’

Directions

Complete the prescribed sets and reps for each move, rest as indicated, then go on to the next one. Either attack it as a standalone workout, or swap it in for one of your normal back sessions every couple of weeks.

Ring burpee

Sets 5 Reps 5 Rest 60sec

This is an effective warm-up. Drop to the floor, chest to the deck, then spring back to your feet and jump up, grabbing the rings and using your momentum to help you pull your chin to hand-height.

Pull-up

Sets 5 Reps 3 Rest 60sec

Time to go strict. Hold the rings shoulder-width apart and pull up until your chin is at least level with them. Some knee movement is acceptable, but not much. 

Twisting knee raise

Sets 3 Reps 3 each side Rest 60sec

Hang from the rings with shoulders ‘activated’ – pull them down slightly and keep them there. Bring your knees up and to one side, trying to minimise swing. Lower under control and repeat on the other side.

Toes-to-rings

Sets 5 Reps 5 Rest 60sec

Hang from the rings and bring your toes to ring height, with your legs and arms straight. Lower under control.

Inverted pull-up

Sets 5 Reps 3 Rest 60sec

Hang from the rings and tilt backward so that your back is parallel to the floor. Now do your pull-ups from there. Yes, really.
